drinkcam has two parts, and it needs both:

FREE 📱 iPhone app Guests and staff use it to film and stream. Free on the App Store, no signup.
💻 Mac host software The organiser's host machine: receives every phone, switches between them, runs the lottery, drives the big screen.

So the app on its own cannot start a livestream — it has to connect to a Mac running the host software on the same local network.

What drinkcam does

You know the KissCam at a basketball game: the camera finds someone in the crowd and the whole arena reacts. drinkcam is that, for a wedding reception. Planners and guests walk the room with their phones, and every cheer, every laugh, every clink of glasses goes straight to the big screen in real time. Frame someone mid-toast and the whole hall shouts at them to drink.

📱 Already downloaded the drinkcam app?

  1. Join the network the organiser or planner tells you to use
  2. Open the drinkcam app
  3. Scan the QR code on the big screen and you're in

💡 No QR code on screen, or nothing happens when you scan?
Almost always it's because your phone isn't on the venue network — mobile data will not work. Ask a member of the venue staff.

💡 Not at an event, just downloaded it to look around? The app needs to connect to a host Mac at a venue, so on its own it won't show anything — if you'd like to run your own event, see what you need below.

🎬 What you need to run your own event

Four things, and you probably already have two of them

  • 💻 An Apple Silicon Mac (M1／M2／M3／M4, macOS 12 or later)
    This runs the host software. Tested on an 8GB M1 with 15 phones connected and it stayed smooth — the software itself uses about 300MB of RAM and 1–3% CPU.
  • 🔑 A drinkcam host licence (from NT$1,800)
    The licence key is emailed the moment payment goes through. Download the software from this site and paste the key in.
  • 📶 A network both the phones and the Mac can reach
    This doesn't have to cost anything. Three options, cheapest first:
    ・A phone hotspot — free, and it works. Best for small events with 3–4 phones (an iPhone hotspot usually allows 5 connections, and we don't recommend filming on the phone that's hosting it).
    ・The venue's Wi-Fi — just ask. Plenty of venues are happy to help.
    ・A Wi-Fi router — the choice for 8+ phones, or when you don't want to take any chances. One router covered an entire banquet hall in our tests. Bring your own, or rent ours (included in the NT$2,800 day package).
    Whichever you choose, test it at the venue beforehand. Some venue networks block device-to-device connections (client isolation), which means the phones simply cannot reach the Mac. It takes three minutes to find that out in advance — and it's too late to fix on the day.
  • 📱 iPhones for guests and staff (iOS 15.5 or later)
    They just install the free drinkcam app. No signup, no payment.

🔐 Privacy and security

drinkcam runs entirely on the local network:
  • Video travels only across the venue network
  • Nothing is uploaded to the cloud or stored on third-party servers
  • No guest names, phone numbers or email addresses are collected
  • When the event ends the service shuts down and no video is kept
